Burt Lancaster Signed Biographical Theater Sheet, Incl. Name Change

A signed Biography File for Theatre World by actor Burton Lancaster. 1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", New York, n.d. [ca. 1946]. The partially-printed page is filled out by the actor, with approximately 65-70 words in Lancaster's hand. Signed at the conclusion "Burton Lancaster." The file reveals that Lancaster had at one time been considering making his stage name "Stuart Chase", along with details of his background in Vaudeville, the circus, and having spent 26 months overseas touring in Italy with a show for the 5th Army. The sheet has flattened folds, chipping at the edges, and minor paper loss. No text is affected by this. Light toning at the edges. Boldly signed.

Burton Stephen Lancaster (1913-1994) was an American actor whose career in films and television spanned over a 45-years. He was a four-time nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actor (winning once) and won two BAFTA Awards and one Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actor. The American Film Institute ranks Lancaster as #19 of the greatest male stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Having come off his role in "A Sound of Hunting", Lancaster attracted the attention of numerous producers, including Hal B. Wallis. Lancaster moved to Los Angeles to pursue a Hollywood career, and Wallis signed him to an eight movie contract. It was Wallis who suggested that Lancaster change his name to "Stuart Chase", but the idea was eventually scrapped due to American economist Stuart Chase (1888-1985) already having become famous as a member of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's brain trust who coined the phrase "New Deal."
