War of 1812 Aftermath Return Incl. "Musquets Bayonets Catridge Boxes"

Manuscript Document, 1p, 7.5" x 12", [Vermont], ca. October 1816. Docketing at verso reads: "Return of the 11th / Regt Oct 1816". Expected folds with marked separation. Previous tape repair to detached central fold. Creasing and chipping to edges. Foxing, toning and soiling. In good plus condition.

A list of captains returning from the 11th Regiment: Asa Head, Isaac Sargent; Nathan Hickney; Daniel Sawyer; Daniel M. Moore; Benjamin Wells; Samuel Knowlton (crossed out, then written again); James Greene; John Hancock; Benjamin Whidden, Amos Chamberlain, Isaac Eastman, Edward Osgood, and Moses Shute. The accounting of supplies includes 658 "Musquets", 654 bayonets, and 656 cartridge boxes.

The 11th U.S. Infantry Regiment was organized on January 11, 1812 (in its second iteration) and consisted originally of six companies from Vermont and four from New Hampshire. The army gathered at Plattsburgh, New York, numbering about 8,000 men, of whom nearly one-half were Vermonters. A few of the names listed are from other New England states, such as Benjamin Whidden who was born in Maine, or Daniel Sawyer who was born in Massachusetts.

Col. Asa Head (1783-1839) was a much-respected farmer born in New Hampshire. He was appointed captain of the first company of light infantry in the 11th regiment, October 24, 1815; major of the Eleventh regiment, May 19, 1820; lieutenant-colonel of the same regiment, December 8, 1820; and colonel, June, 1821, which office he resigned in 1824.
