Hamilton's Second at his Fatal Duel Settles Debt

[Alexander Hamilton]. Nathaniel Pendleton. Letter Signed, "Nath Pendleton", 1p, 8" x 10", Albany, New York, February 8, 1806. Docketing at verso. Moderate scattered foxing. Expected mailing folds with some separation. Tear at bottom left corner, not affecting text. In very good condition.

Pendleton's letter to Benjamin Walker, in full: "I have sold Mr. Ellery's lot to Doctor Delavan, in whose hands I have left the sum of one hundred and sixty dollars, which he promises to pay you on his way from hence to Seneca Lake. If your debt amounts to more please draw on me for the Ballance & it shall be paid as you devise, if less enclose me the difference. I did not bring your letter mentioning the amount of your Debt and have therefore guessed at it. Let me know soon before I send the money I have received to Mr. Ellery. You will please cancel the mortgage & deliver it to Doct. Delavan."

Nathaniel Pendleton (1756-1821) served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War as an aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene. He was Attorney General of Georgia from 1785 to 1786, before George Washington nominated him for a seat in the United States District Court, Georgia, in 1789. He was a Judge of the Dutchess County Court until 1821. Pendleton served as a second to Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton’s fatal duel with Aaron Burr.

Benjamin Walker (1753-1818) was a captain in the Revolutionary War. Walker's fluency in French gained him the attention of Baron von Steuben, and he was appointed von Steuben's aide. At the close of the war, he was appointed as an aide-de-camp to General George Washington. After the war, Walker became secretary to the Governor of New York, then a broker, member of Congress, and finally for many years before his death, manager of the Estates of the Earl of Bute in Central New York.
