Item Details
Description
This is a rare late 1800's Staffordshire Female Figure known as "Little Red Riding Hood". She has wonderful multi-color hand painted features with great attention to details, including little sprigs of flowers on her dress, etc. typical of the original Staffordshire Little Red Riding Hood pieces. She is seated with her right hand placed on a wolf which lies beside her. She has a basket over her left arm, and holds a bunch of flowers in her left hand The figurine stands 8" tall and it is 6" by 4 1/2" at the base. The figurine is in near mint condition - it has no chips and cracks. There is some crazing that is normal for those figurines - please refer to the pictures. Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed. English pottery figural groups were made during the latter part of the 18th Century. They were potted from simple two-piece press molds. Once dry, the molds were placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside. The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process. After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze. Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, overglaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time. Due to the deposits of clay left in the molds, the average mold's life would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality. This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold's life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced.
