China, Eastern Zhou dynasty, 5th-3rd century BC
The stone carved as a sinuous dragon, depicted with a pointed laid-back horn and snout-like nose, the compact S-shaped body interlinking with a long-crested phoenix, terminating with its head carved on the other end. The translucent stone of a pale celadon tone with black speckles, a russet area at the dragon's head and few white areas of calcification. Pierced at the top to allow suspension as a pendant.
Condition: Good condition commensurate with age, with wear, weathering, and small smoothened chips.
Provenance: Collection of Stephen Poulin, Toronto. Mr. Poulin is an avid collector of archaic jades for 40 years and a renown professional in the art conservation industry.
