Board measures 8x22 framed to overall size of 14x28. Bannister was the only major African American artist of the late nineteenth century who developed his talents without European exposure; he was well known in the artistic community of Providence and admired within the wider East Coast art world. Bannister created a sensation when one of his paintings won first prize at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. Condition: Fine
