Ca. AD 200. A gold finger ring comprised of a round shallow hoop with expanded shoulders and a bezel set with a banded agate intaglio. This charming stone was incised with a left-facing portrait of the god Faunus, known to the Greeks as Pan. In ancient Roman religion and mythology, Faunus is the god of the wild, shepherds and nature. He was associated with rustic music and was a companion of the nymphs. Faunus is depicted with his characteristic hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr.
