Item Details
Description
A nostalgic and lovely Impressionist oil painting on board titled "At the Bust Stop (Waiting for the Bus)" by Bertha Sophia Menzler-Peyton. Signed by the artist bottom left. Created circa 1920s. Original gallery tags from Allied Artist of America (New York, NY) and R.H. Love Galleries Inc. (Chicago, IL) on verso. A window into city life in the early 20th century in a classic and timeless painterly style. Dimensions: 16.25"h x 20"w x 1.5"d (framed). In good vintage condition consistent with age. Provenance: From a private estate, who purchased the painting from R.H. Love Gallery, and the current owner inherited the painting from their family. This painting does not have supplementary authentication paperwork. An accredited appraiser reviewed the painting and considered it to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity, which is reflected in the reserve pricing. Bertha Sophia Menzler-Peyton (1871-1947) studied at the Chicago Art Institute and moved to Paris where she continued her studies with Luc-Olivier Merson, Raphael Collin, and Edmond Aman-Jean. Returning to live in Chicago, Menzler-Peyton painted one in a series of eight murals, begun in 1900, that were located on the tenth floor of the Fine Arts Building, lacerated at 410 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago. At the 1919 annual meeting of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors "held in the board room of the Architectural League of New York in November," Menzler Peyton and Miss Florence Francis Snell were elected vice-presidents. Her work was included in the 2016-2017 exhibition "Rebels With a Cause: American Impressionist Women" organized by the Huntsville Museum of Art.
