Joseph Goethe stone sculptures are rare. This sculpture was formerly in the collection of the artist Stanton Macdonald Wright (1890-1973), who was a close friend of Goethe.

Depth: 5 1/2"
Height (on base): 4 1/2"
PROVENANCE: Given to Stanton Macdonald Wright by the artist; Stanton Macdonald Wright estate; California collector.
CONDITION: Excellent condition with no damage or restoration. Plexiglass base with minor wear.
NOTES / REFERENCES: Joseph Goethe was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1912. Goethe studied at the Dayton Art Institute and the Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC. By 1947 he had moved to California with a studio in Santa Monica. He was a member of the Santa Monica Art Guild. During the 1960s he lived on the Monterey Peninsula. He died in Santa Barbara in 1993.
