NOTES / REFERENCES: A contemporary of Rembrandt, the Baroque painter and etcher Adriaen van Ostade was a student of Franz Hals (1582-1666 ) and spent most of his career in Haarlem, Holland. Ostade was well known for his scenes of peasant life. In this interior view, however, the human presence is less significant and placed in the background. Instead, the focus is on expressively lit descriptive details and rich textural effects of inanimate objects and chickens within the barn. The formal freedom and loose, sketchy handling of this compelling rural barn scene, in which the bent figure of a woman at work almost blends with the background, sets it apart from the rest of Van Ostade’s production.
