Description
**Originally Listed At $700**
Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A hollow-form terracotta figure molded to resemble the form of a standing female musician. She plays a simple tympanum - an ancient hand drum or tambourine - held by her left hand and tapped with her right. Draped in a flowing robe which covers her breasts and shoulders, she gazes out from a round visage with heavy-lidded eyes and pudge cheeks. Her corded coiffure is tucked beneath an arching head band with a central element resembling an uraeus. The terracotta is embellished with liberal remains of white pigmentation, adding to her a sense of movement and rhythm. Size: 2.7" W x 5.4" H (6.9 cm x 13.7 cm)
Cf. the Metropolitan Museum of Art (89.2.2005), Museum of Fine Arts Budapest (75.12.A), and Royal Ontario Museum (910.165.176, 910.165.171, and 916.1.490).
