Item Details
Description
U.S. Navy Navy Wool & Leather Warrant Officer Cap C 1863-1866 L 10” | Wool. Made by J.J. Muller 182 N. Gay St. Baltimore. Brass buttons of eagles clutching anchors at the chin strap. U.S. Navy Uniform Regulations of 1852 prescribe the cap device for warrant officers as a gold embroidered anchor worn vertically on the front of the cap. The 1862 edition of Uniform Regulations does not mention cap devices for warrant officers. Changes to the 1862 Uniform Regulations in 1863 Prescribe a cap that was shorter than in the past and whose crown was the same diameter as the base - this cap matches that description. 1864 Navy Uniform Regulations also do not mention a cap device for warrant officers. The regulations of 1866, immediately after the Civil War, state that the warrant officers' cap device would now be a gold wreath of oak and olive branches. Although not mentioned in 1862, 1863, or 1864, it can be assumed that the warrant officers between 1862 and 1866 continued to wear the anchor device until its replacement by the wreath. John J. Muller at 182 N. Gay St. shows up in the Balitmore City Directory of 1885 under the heading of Hats, Caps, and Furs, Retail. We would like to thank U.S. Navy Master Chief Hospital Corpsman, Mark T. Hacala (Retired) for his assistance in identifying this cap and insignia. Provenance: Property from a private collector of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
