Description
Rare Pair of English Patinated Bronze Argand Lamps with "Continents" Decoration, circa 1825, the tapered patinated bronze standards set in molded gilt-bronze bezels, with a gilt-bronze applied figure of "Asia" on one, seated on a camel, and "America" on the other, portrayed as a Native American, the gilt capitals hold breathers under a reeded element, the decorative band around the tanks portrays flora and leaves, now fitted with electric sockets and period trumpet-shaped floral- and grape-cut shades, h. 21", dia. 5-1/4".
Condition
Both are in good condition. They retain their original finish, which is worn and rubbed in places commensurate with their age. There are some shallow dents to the top of the fuel tanks. The original burners were removed when the lamps were electrified, and modern sockets and a modern shade holder were installed. The shades appear to be period but are made for standard Argands, not stand Argands.
