Carved from an incredibly heavy dense wood with encrusted surface suggesting years of sacrificial offerings as a bateba Thil or Spirit effigy on a fertility shrine. Lobi peoples, Burkina Faso, West Africa. Measures 20.5 inches tall on metal base that measures 5 x 5 inches. Provenance: Ex William Wright Gallery, New York, 1980s, also Ex Eugene Netzer collection, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.

Good, well weathered, incredibly dense wood.
