Description
A carved wooden helmet mask with elaborate coiffure and finial with two leopards, spiral designs and classic painted white face with raised scars. Maiden masks are representations of adolescent females which convey Igbo ideals of youthful feminine beauty. In their original context, they were danced by male performers during festivals honoring important patron deities, as well as for entertainment. During performances they were complemented by vibrantly colored suits. This mask measures 18 x 8 inches. Provenance: Ex William Wright Gallery, New York 1980s, also Eugene netzer collection, New York.
