In part: ‘…When the 11th & 12th Corps passed through this city, I stationed agents at the Railroad to ascertain from the Adjutants of the various regiments the strengths of the commands. From their reports it appears that transportation was given to something over twenty thousand men. This seems to me to be more than actually were and I therefore have the honor to request that it you will…inform me what was the strength of these corps according to their last reports, and what was the probable number of officers, servants and other camp followers entitled to transportation, so that an aggregate can be fixed…’. With secretarial endorsements of Ingalls and Seth Williams on verso, together with an E.S. of Rucker. On the day of this letter, the Bristoe Station campaign commenced in Virginia, with the battle just five days later. Fine condition.
