Description
(1830 - 1864) Union officer who raised the Irish Brigade, mortally wounded at Winchester and begged his men to 'Lay me down and save the flag!'. Rare war-date manuscript L.S. 'Jas. A. Mulligan Colonel', 1p. 4to, New Creek, WV, Nov. 21, 1863, a signed retained copy of his letter to Col. JOHN A. CAMPBELL (1835-1880), adjutant general on Major General John M. Schofield's staff, a brevet brigadier general and the first governor of the Wyoming Territory. A good content letter quoting Campbell's endorsement on papers in a case concerning Col. Edward W. Wynkoop, who served as an officer in the First Colorado Volunteer Cavalry during the war. He writes: '...[You write] I regard the Railroad as poorly and inadequately guarded by present disposition of the troops along the line of the road' This touches a subject on which I have been engaged for many days and I would be pleased to have your views fully upon the location of the troops along the road and the reasons for the sites you select...' Fine condition.
