Description
(1827 – 1901) Confederate brigadier general who commanded his regiment at the Battle of South Mountain and the Battle of Antietam. Four companies of his regiment were decimated at the Crater, and he himself was badly wounded there. Fine association war-date A.L.S. 1p. 4to., San Augustine, Texas, Jan. 17, 1863, to Gen. JOHN B. MAGRUDER (1807-1871), a Confederate major general who routed Union forces at Big Bethel and re-captured Galveston in a daring attack in January, 1863. Wallace introduces a Mr. Collins, a tanner, whom Wallace wishes to exempt from military service. In part: ‘…He employs four hands at his tan yard…& has contributed largely to our citizens with leather. His loss to us will be sensibly felt in the community. Mr. Collins has been drafted into the militia…as state law does not exempt tanners…though the Conscript law of the Confederate States extends an exemption to tanners. Should it be in your power to order his discharge you will render a most acceptable service to our community…’. Signed at conclusion, along with five other officers in agreement with Wallace’s request. On integral address leaf letterhead, with tear on verso from opening, otherwise toned folds and in very good condition.
