Description
On March 1, 1954, four Puerto Rican nationalists unfurled a Puerto Rican flag from the balcony in the House of Representatives and fired 30 pistol rounds at Representatives who were debating an immigration bill. Five Representatives were wounded, one seriously, but all recovered. The assailants were arrested, tried and convicted in federal court, and given long sentences, effectively life imprisonment. In 1978 and 1979, they were pardoned by President Jimmy Carter; all four returned to Puerto Rico. Offered here is 3.5 x 2 in. piece of brown leather taken from a chair which was struck by one of more of the assassin's bullets. According to our consignor, a 60+ year collector whose brief note accompanies these relics, the chairs were stripped of their damaged leather covering when it was decided that they should be scrapped entirely. With related newspaper clippings. Very good.
