Description
(1885-1977) Wife of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Fine content and association war-date T.L.S. on '10 Downing Street' letterhead, 1p. 4to., London, [n.d.], to Viscountess NANCY ASTOR (1879-1964), an American-born British politician who was the first woman seated as a Member of Parliament. Churchill writes in thanks for Astor's support of her Aid to Russia Fund, created to provide for starving and ill-clothed Russian wartime civilians. Churchill thanks Astor for her 'generous gift', adding: '...When I broadcast on New Years Eve we were in debt. Now we are clear. Soon we shall have in hand a substantial sum, so that we can keep up not only a steady flow of supplies, but be ready to meet unexpected calls. I thank you will all my heart...'. Folds, else near fine. Criticized for her antisemitism and sympathetic view of Nazism, and a stern advocate of temperance, Astor was a favorite target of Winston Churchill. One night she encountered the Prime Minister rather liquored-up and declared: 'Winston, you're drunk!' to which he replied 'And you are ugly. However, when I wake up tomorrow, I shall be sober, and you will still be ugly!'
