Description
A carved wooden dance mask in classic style, kaolin clay pigments, scar designs carved in relief, crested coiffure and well handled edges. Such masks were worn by male performers of a stilt dance called "mukudj," which involved towering impressively while executing complex choreography and astonishing feats of acrobatics. Punu peoples, Gabon, Africa. This mask measures 12 inches tall x 7 inches wide , 14 inches tall on high quality professional display stand. Provenance: Ex Dannenberg collection, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
