A carved wooden male shrine idol with classic facial features, carved scar designs, shown holding his beard,and embellished with various iron spears, bones, shells and red textiles. Kneeling figures, often nude, are common in Yoruba religious art. In this pose, the figure represents a supplicant before the orisha, or deity, on whose altar it is placed. The kneeling pose communicates respect, courtesy, and supplication and therefore honors the orisha. The sculpture measures 9.75 inches tall.
