Description
This colorful and detailed image portrays some of the many attractions of a show by famous American magician, George and his troupe of eighteen performers.Grover George (1887 - 1958), was born in Zanesville, Ohio and began his professional career by performing in magic shows in small towns in the United States. In 1922 as his reputation expanded, he purchased the equipment and the rights to Doc Nixon's "Hong Kong Mysteries". One of his best tools was the use of the poster medium in advertising his acts, and this image is one of a group where he portrayed himself as "The Supreme Master of Magic". As George's popularity grew in America, he ran into strong opposition from Howard Thurston, the most prominent magician and illusionist of the day. Thurston sought to eliminate George as competition by bullying theatres into choosing between him and George. George was essentially stonewalled in the United States, and chose to begin again in South America. Grover George's career flourished in this new market, and he was buried in Sao Paolo, Brazil upon his death. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
