The humble travel agent has long been an important role in arranging travel plans, especially among the upper echelons of society. The industry rose in importance alongside the development of train travel in the 1800s. Thomas Cook's agency was founded in 1841 in London, and began with just servicing the areas within England. The Great Exhibition of 1851 enabled him to expand his services greatly, and with his sons' later involvement the company set their sights on tours internationally. Thos. Cook and Son, Ltd. would eventually grow enough in prominence to be purchased by the train conglomerate, Wagons Lits, in 1928.
