Item Details
Description
PHILLIPS, John (ca. 1800-1868) & RIDER, Alfred (19th Century).
[Trio of Lithographs from Mexico Illustrated].
1. Zacatecas.
2. Near Caneles, Madre Monte.
3. Plain of Perote.
Lithographs with original hand color.
Londond: E. Atchley, 1848.
14" x 19" sheet, each.

From the first edition of a beautifully produced book of Mexican views. Produced in the wake of the Mexican-American War, these lithographs were meant for a travel book rather than a military history, though some of the views depict armies. The views cover much of the country, from the Caribbean coast, inland to Mexico City, and then to the Gulf Coast. Phillips was an officer of the Real del Monte mining company, and contributed the text, offered in English and Spanish. Abbey Travel, II:671; Palau 224780; Sabin 62498.
