Lot 17: Versace | Spring 2009 Verhoeven Print Dress

A Versace empire-waisted silk patterned cocktail dress, print designed by artist Julie Verhoeven for Donatella Versace's spring 2009 collection. 

A Versace Greco-Roman-inspired dress designed by Donatella Versace; the custom seasonal created by artist Julie Verhoeven. The dresses have racer-back straps, a ruched bust, and an open skirt. The interior lined with silk has a built-in bra with underwire. There is a zip closure at the left side of the dress with a hook-and-eye closure. The dress has a Versace label, marked a size 44. 

In her critique of the show, Vogue Runways (then Style.com), Sarah Mower wrote that "the most memorable impression was left by the pretty, summery prints of starfish, shells, and girl faces, hand-drawn and painted by Julie Verhoeven." Mower even noted the growth of Donatella's designs for the collection, leaving behind the house's ostentatious and overt design pallet, opting for a sweet, sophisticated style.
