Description
Eastern Europe, Macedonia (sphere of Greek influence), ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A beautiful Macedonian pottery transport amphora of tall, globular form with a thick neck and rim. The sizable, egg-shaped body features a protruding knob on the bottom for better stability in loose ground that is typical for storage vessels and transport containers. The absence of handles suggests this vessel held non-liquid substances or materials that did not require 'pouring' to be removed. Countless marine encrustations have accumulated across both interior and exterior surfaces, alluding to its age and time spent underwater. Size: 14.9" Diameter x 22" H (37.8 cm x 55.9 cm)
Cf. 'Chronicles Of The Roman World', Timothy R. Roberts, p. 78 for very similar examples found at the Macedonian capital of Pella.
