Featured in this lot is this Navajo Chinle Trading Post rug circa 1940's. The rug features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool construction that shows geometric patterns throughout the center of the rug with a border of the rug and shows black, orange, off white, and heathered brown coloration throughout the rug design. This regional Navajo Rug style is named for the town of Chinle at the mouth of Canyon de Chelly. The Chinle style was developed by Mary Cabot Wheelwright and Cozy McSparron, a trader at Chinle. They sought to revive weaving using classic period designs with vegetal dyes. The Chinle characteristics are horizontal bands containing Chevrons, Chinle Stars, Squash Blossoms and Diamonds in muted colors of gold, green, tan, ivory and pink. The condition of this Navajo rug is well preserved with some fraying to the edges and some small holes to the weave of the rug with some slight bleeding to the orange dyed sections and some stains to the rug but is otherwise well preserved. The measurements of this rug is 79 1/2" x 46". The thread count is 78 threads per square inch.
