Description
Norman Rockwell Original Drawing on paper. Artist: Norman RocwellTitle: Santa ClausTechnique: Watercolor on paper.Measurements: 18 x 13 cmSigned: Yes, lower right.Biography: Norman Rockwell was an American painter and illustrator known for his iconic depictions of American culture created for The Saturday Evening Post. With a range of favorite subjects that included nuclear families, mischievous children, and small-town life, his work has achieved an iconic status: the 1943 painting of a Thanksgiving dinner, Freedom from Want, has been reproduced and parodied countless times in contemporary culture . As an artist, Rockwell has had a lasting effect on US society beyond any singular work, with his paintings seen as indelible images that went on to inspire American directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and particularly Robert Zemeckis, whose 1994 film Forrest Gump recreates several of Rockwell's paintings as scenes throughout the film. Although he enjoyed success throughout his career, Rockwell's idyllic and sentimental outlook on American society was not necessarily embraced by art critics, although his later politically activist work garnered praise for his tackling of controversial subjects. Born on February 3, 1894 in New York, NY, he went on to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. Rockwell notably had a longstanding relationship with the Boy Scouts of America, for which he contributed illustrations to their annual calendar. He died on November 8, 1978 in Stockbridge, MA.Norman Percevel Rockwell (New York, United States, February 3, 1894 - Stockbridge, Massachusetts, United States, November 8, 1978) was an American illustrator, photographer and painter known for his costumbristas images full of irony and humor. His childhood was happy, traveling and spending summers in New Jersey with his family. Since he was little, he showed a great talent for drawing, starting with some battleships that the children of his town liked very much. Around 1908 he discovers that his true vocation is definitely illustration, and for this reason he has attended art classes at the Chase School in Manhattan every day since that year.At the age of fifteen, he permanently abandoned his studies to go to the National Academy School, where he made copies of plaster casts, a custom typical of many 19th century artists, as an apprenticeship. In 1910, Rockwell moved to the New York League of Art Students, where he learned anatomy and illustration, honing his previous knowledge, with teachers such as George Bridgman or Thomas Fogarty. However, his career will be forever immortalized by his employment as an official illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post, a current affairs and society magazine; its first cover dates from 1916; Norman Rockwell worked for this magazine until 1963. Its covers, advertisements, brochures, cards, illustrations and other advertisements have been repeated and imitated ad nauseam, symbol of the typical virtuous American illustrator: he advertised for McDonald's or Coca-Cola, cereals, chewing gums , tires, etc.
