Item Details
Description
Literary Remains, Four Vol. Set, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This four-volume set by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is titled "The Literary Remains Of Samuel Taylor Coleridge", collected and edited by Henry Nelson Coleridge and published by William Pickering between 1836 and 1839, and we believe it is a first edition set. The first two volumes are devoted to literature, including comments and notes about Shakespeare and his writings, and have often been reprinted under different titles. The last two volumes deal largely with theological writers. All four volumes are based upon manuscripts and marginal notes which were revised and rewritten by the editor. The first book has five raised bands, six gilt-ruled compartments with black labels, gilt lettering and gilt tooling on the spine, polished calf covers with double gilt-fillet borders, marbled endpapers with a Hoar armorial bookplate, the title page with the anchor colophon of William Pickering and dated 1836, a six-page Preface, two pages of"L'Envoy", five pages of Contents, the text which begins with "The Fall of Robespierre" and runs for 395 pages, and all the edges are marbled. The second book has four pages of Contents, 416 pages of text, is also dated 1836, and has the extensive notes and comments about Shakespeare (they run from page 53 to 267). The third book is dated 1838 and has one page of Contents, a seven-page Preface, 422 pages of text, and "Corrigenda" on the last page of the text, which means "Corrections" in Latin, very similar to errata, and none of the points listed have been corrected, which makes this a first edition. The last book is dated 1839 on the title page, with one page Contents followed by a one-page Advertisement thanking people for helping the editor put the books together, and 438 pages of text. All the books have Hoar armorial bookplate, the anchor colophon of William Pickering on the title page, all the edges are marbled, and there are no half titles. Henry Nelson Coleridge (1798 - 1843) was the nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, a barrister, classical scholar and contributor to the Quarterly Review, and the editor of the works of his uncle; he was married to his cousin, Sara Coleridge, daughter of the poet, and became Coleridge's literary executor after Coleridge died in 1834.The books are 8vo. and measure 8 5/8 x 5 1/2 in. wide, with tight bindings and clean pages and text, with just faint spots of browning here and there, light rubbing along the edges of the spines, at the heels and crowns, along the edges of the boards, and at the tips - two tips have a little more wear than that - and if you're a fan of Coleridge, an attractive set to keep your eye on.(We've seen one set selling for $600, and we don't know how - the spines are abominable, lacking pieces all over the place, there is tape on the gutters to reinforce the hinges on that set - the set here is so much better - and you be the judge.) #41 #1602
