Howard Brodie (1916-2010) USA, Ink/Paper Collage. Note from Howard Brodie on the piece. Heads of different people on the collage. Was given to Major General William Peterkin Upshur. Major General William Peterkin Upshur (October 28, 1881 – July 21, 1943)[1] was the recipient of the United States' highest military decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in 1915 during the Haitian Campaign. Overall Size: 34 3/4 x 27 5/8 in. Sight Size: 32 7/8 x 25 5/8 in. Thickness: 7/8 in. #5791 & #8. Howard Brodie is known for Combat, newspaper sports and courtroom artist. Howard Joseph Brodie was born in Oakland, CA on Nov. 28, 1916. Brodie studied at the California School of Fine Arts and at the Art Students League in New York City. He took his first job in the art department of the San Francisco Chronicle in 1935. During WWII he was awarded a Bronze Star for valor and became famous for his combat sketches which appeared in Life, Look, and other national magazines. He returned to the Chronicle in 1953. Upon retirement, he settled in San Miguel, CA. He died in Monterey County, CA on Sept. 12, 2010.
