Item Details

Description

West or South Africa, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure of a bald man seated at a small desk, his right hand positioned as if holding a writing tool. The man wears a jacket, trousers, and high-heeled boots typical of Colonial garb, and his face is incised with sharp, stylized features. Size: 2.4" L x 2" W x 7.3" H (6.1 cm x 5.1 cm x 18.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York City, New York, USA, acquired on the London art market in 1990
