Description
Hugo Carlberg (Swedish, 1880-1943). Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Dimensions: 22" x 26". Framed: 26" x 30". Many Swedish artists such as Carlburg connect to their native land and attempt to capture what is unique and precious about the rural life. But as an artist looking outward this landscape image captures a satisfaction and celebration of the natural beauty of Sweden and embracing limited winter daylight hours as a metaphor for tranquility. Hugo Carlberg (sometimes spelled Carlburg) was born in Småland, Sweden and studied at the Art Academy of Sweden (1900-1905). During his academic years, he occasionally lived at the artists' home in Neglinge in Saltsjöbaden established by Ernest Thiel. The home had room for around twenty students and during Carlberg's time we met Karl Isaksson, Oskar Bergman, Hjalmar Söderberg and Gerard Henning. After completing his studies, in he undertook a long European trip to Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. In Paris, he studied at Academie Colarossi and Academie Grand Chaumiére and painted in Normandy in the summer of 1906. In the winters of 1907-10 he lived in Målilla in Småland and during the summers in Arild in Skåne. Carlberg exhibited for the first time at Sweden's Allmänna konstförening in Stockholm in 1906. He participated with a collection of paintings at the industry, art and crafts exhibition in Lund in 1907 and the following year he had his first solo exhibition in Malmö.
