Description
Antonio Cirino (1888-1983). "Market Place". Oil on panel. SLL. Signed verso on artist's label.Dimensions: 8" x 10". Beautifully framed: 14" x 16". This early morning market scene with red skirted ladies hustling around the carts is a delightful painting. The location is unknown. Could it be a busy Rockport market with the Congregational Church looming in the background? The impressionist style and dramatic palette suggest that it is a later work by Cirino who mastered his fluid brushwork and vibrant color in all his paintings by the 1930’s.Antonio Cirino loved his home in Rockport, Mass, a summer retreat from the urban setting of Providence where he taught at RISD and painted in his East Providence Studio. It is not surprising that his Rockport paintings and images are highly desired & collected by connoisseurs who find them the most genuine and inspired of his works. As Rockport gained notoriety as a creative haven, artists flocked to the town to capture its authentic New England imagery. Cirino, a founding member of the Rockport Art Association, has become one of the most collectable artists of his era for this subject matter along with Gruppe & Thieme. Cirino was a member of the Providence Art Club and Salmagundi in NYC and exhibited often in member shows and group exhibits with fellow RISD colleague Mabel Woodward and Stacy Tolman.
