Biography: Will Ousley was Willie C. Ousley, born 28 April 1866 in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia to Thomas and Mollie Ousley. By deed of 21 Oct 1871, Mollie O. Owsley turned over custody of her baby son Willie C. Owsley to Matt Pitts and his wife. Over the next few years, Willie came in the custody of Mr. & Mrs. A. J. Kingery and in 1876 was brought by them to Bagdad, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.In 1880, Willie Ousley, age 10, was living in the household of A. K. Kingrey in the Vincent settlement of Calcasieu Parish. As a child, Will began drawing and painting on anything he could find and eventually created his own style, painting pictures of the nearby swamps and the Calcasieu River. In 1890 his family sent him to New Orleans to study under the noted German painter, Humbreight. During his lifetime he painted over 2,000 pictures. In 1927, art dealers began buying up all of his paintings, and he first became aware they were worth something. He died 3 June 1953.
