Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A remarkable omphacite jade and shell axe god figure - the body string cut with simplified features, characteristic of Mezcala artistry. The eyes and mouth are inlaid with white shell fragments - the end teeth slightly curved like fangs. The Mezcala specialized in abstracting human physiognomy using string-cut technology and saying so much through line and volume. One of the finer examples of Mezcala carving we have seen! 9.5" H Custom metal stand included.
