Description
Ancient Roman Marble Lion Head c.2nd century AD. Size 11-1/4 inches diagonal measure. White marble fragment, most likely from a fountain antefix. Remnants include part of the curly mane, bulging eyes, snout and part of the mouth, the underside of which is part of the water spout. Weathered and eroded, reassembled from four fragments and with a rusted iron spike drilled into the underside for mounting, but missing the base. Provenance: Estate of George S. Mack, Greenwich. Acquired from Fortuna Fine Arts, NYC. 4/14/94.
