This is from the period after the "Grand Consolidation" of 1866 when Wells Fargo, Holladay, and Overland Mail stage lines were united under the Wells Fargo name, and the company began its domination of Western stagecoach express and banking. No. 312, issued for 100 shares to HW Perkins on February 25th, 1870. Signed by Ashbel Barney as president, C. Goddard as treasurer, and George K. Otis as secretary. Pen cancelled. Tied 25 cent adhesive revenue stamp on the front. A second stamp on the reverse. Pinholes, folds, creases. 8.25 x 12" Ashbel Barney served as president 1869-1870. He was the brother of Danford Barney, who was also involved with Wells Fargo from the beginning. The two also formed the United States Express Company.
