Description
This 1752 copperplate engraving by Jacques Nicolas Bellin depicts Nagasaki, Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate era. The map shows the area built and controlled by the Dutch East India Company, based on Dutch sources as they were the only foreign power allowed to dock in Japan, and only on that one island. A key to principal locations is provided in the title cartouche. Published in Paris as part of Anton Francois Provost’s ‘Histoire General des Voyages, ou Nouvelle Collection de Toutes les Relations de Voyages’, this map measures 15 1/2” x 10” and is in excellent condition. Authenticity is guaranteed.
