19th century Victorian handmade miser purse. Crochet with micro beaded looped tassels. center slit. 21 in. Long x 3.5 in. Wide. Sliding ring closure. Discoloration to purple crochet yarn. Coins or small objects are placed inside, are slid to the end pouched, rolled and closed with the rings. The shape of the misers purse originated from the medieval practice of carrying coins in the toe of a stocking. It originated in the late 18th century and was called misers, hookers, aumonieres, and wallet. The misers purse grew in popularity in England , used by men and women. Shaped into a long tube, often crocheted or knitted, with or without beads, and closed at both ends with a slider rings.
