WEST VIRGINIA STENCILED MERCHANT'S STONEWARE JUG, salt-glazed, approximately half-gallon capacity, beehive form with plain mouth and applied strap handle. Stenciled cobalt "C. KRAUS & CO. / WHOLESALE / LIQUOR DEALERS / 1133 MARKET ST. / WHEELING, W. VA". Made for Charles Kraus & Co., Wheeling, WV. Circa 1885. 9 3/8" HOA.
Catalogue Note: Charles Kraus was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1840. He emigrated to the United States when he was 19 years of age. In 1865, following the Civil War, Kraus started a clothing business in Wheeling. By 1881, Charles and his brothers Solomon and Samuel made the decision to venture into the more lucrative liquor business. Kraus & Co. became a success, blending and bottling their whiskeys onsite for their wholesale trade. Charles Kraus passed away in 1893 but the company continued under the management of the remaining brothers. Kraus & Co. disappeared from the Wheeling business directories by 1911.
