Description
GIV-2 MASONIC ARCH - FEDERAL EAGLE PICTORIAL / HISTORICAL FLASK, light to medium olive green, pint size, bold embossing with Masonic Arch obverse and an eagle at reverse with "HS" inside an oval medallion, applied mouth with thin string rim below, kicked-up base with disk pontil scar. Possibly Keene Marlboro Street Glass Works. 1815-1830. 7 1/4" H.
Literature: McKearin/Wilson - American Bottles & Flasks and Their Ancestry, p. 591.
Catalogue Note: A note with the flask claims that it was recovered from the wreck of the Caesar, a British ship which sunk off Bermuda in 1818. It is documented that a small group of these flasks and the related vertically-ribbed "melon-type" flasks were in fact recovered from that wreck, but it cannot be confirmed if this specific flask was among that group. We are also selling an example of the mentioned melon-type flask in this sale as lot 257.
Provenance:
Collection of the late Al and Billy Steidel, Alexandria, VA.
Condition
Very good condition with no apparent chips or cracks but with heavy etching, surface wear/degradation, and staining due to having been recovered from an underwater resting place. A wide open bubble / manufacturing flaw throughout shoulders' interior and with other discolored open bubbles to body, seemingly all as made.
