Description

AMERICAN WHITE'S, UTICA, NEW YORK MOLDED STONEWARE ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA ADVERTISING MUGS, LOT OF TWO, each salt-glazed, of cylindrical form with "ROBERT PORTNER BREWING CO. / ALEXANDRIA, VA. U.S.A." and a diamond to center with "TRADE / TIVOLi / MARK.", cobalt decorations including bands to shoulder, above base, and highlighting name. 1894-1916. 5" HOA.
Literature: Dennee - Robert Portner and His Brewery, p. 130, fig. middle left.
Catalogue Note: Robert Portner emigrated from Westphalia, Prussia to New York in 1853. By 1859, he was able to open his first liquor store in Manhattan. The start of the Civil War brought business in New York to a halt, so by 1861, Portner decided to try his luck in the grocery business in Alexandria, closer to bustling Washington, DC. After establishing himself in the city, Portner and some business partners started a new venture, brewing their own beer. The name Portner & Company was born in 1862. After the war's conclusion, Portner & Company was dissolved and the Robert Portner Brewing Company was formed. The company saw continual success after its formation, becoming one of the leading brewery and distributors in the southeastern United States at that time. Robert Portner passed away in 1906. His sons carried on the business until 1916, when Prohibition took effect in Virginia.

Collection of the late Al and Billy Steidel, Alexandria, VA.
