Description
Forty-Three Days in an Open Boat by Mark Twain, New York: Harper's. 1866. Contained in volume 34 of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" from December 1866 to May, 1867. The December 1866 issue contains Twain's first magazine appearance, of which he wrote an account years later, 'My Debut as a Literary Person,' in which he said, "in my view, a person who published things in a mere newspaper could not properly claim recognition as a Literary Person...he must appear in a magazine." He goes on to tell how he submitted this story to Harper's, signing it as "Mark Twain" so as to give his nom de plume national exposure, only to have the Harper editor garble the spelling of his name, defeating the scheme. Indeed, the index reflects that this article is by one 'Mark Swain.' A milestone in Twain's literary career. Quarter bound black morocco with gilt. Raised bands and gilt titling on the spine.
