Description
A set of four figured maple side chairs marked S. Ely, identical to an illustrated example from the Royal Ontario Museum in "The Furniture of Old Ontario" by Philip Shackleton, plate 143. The substantial shaped and rolled crest rail is supported by a vase-shaped centre splat while the legs retain the Neoclassic klismos form. For seating comfort the figured maple seat rail is rounded at the front and the high front stretcher has an inward curve. Old surface and great patina, caning old but likely replaced. One of the four is stamped S. Ely on the underside of the back seat rail. Figured maple along with birdseye maple in solid and veneer. Southwestern Ontario, 1825-50. Each: 33.5" x 17.5" x 19.25". From the Collection of Scott Ferguson and Ron Van Horne.
