Description
Kudlalak (1940-?) Cape Dorset. In the fall of 1957, James Houston – an artist and federal government employee in Cape Dorset -- introduced printmaking to the Cape Dorset community and in 1958 a printmaking studio was established. This is one of those first stonecut prints from Cape Dorset showing a woman, baby and dog in black ink on a sponged or rolled coral background. Inscribed Kudlalak. Accompanying this stonecut is a handwritten note from Colin Molson dated May 1959 indicating this print was one of the first group sent to the Canadian Handicrafts Guild and Hudson's Bay Company to test the market. The test was successful leading to a viable commercial enterprise for the local community. Unframed: Sight 6" x 4.5". Mat: 11" x 8.5". Colin and Winnifred Molson Foundation.
