Item Details

Description

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A pair of Khmer era bronze bells that may have been used on elephants or in religious rituals. The larger bell has a domed body and flame or petal protrusions around the suspension loop. The smaller bell has a bulbous body and a slit forking into a curvilinear V shape for emitting sound. The clapper ball is still inside, but the earth and mineral encrustations inside prevent the bell from functioning. A pair of flared ridges around the center kept the main body of the bell from touching skin / a surface that would dampen the tone. Size of larger bell: 4" Diameter x 5" H (10.2 cm x 12.7 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

Clapper is missing from the larger bell and does not function. Small Chips and losses to the rim and suspension handle. The smaller bell has the clapper ball but does not function due to heavy earthen deposits on the interior. Losses to bronze along the slit area. Heavy mineral deposits and patina throughout.
