Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec, ca. 1200 to 145 CE. A wooden mask fragment with remains of painted details in white and a burnt-umber, and a narrow eye slit. The lower third has a fine gravel / sand made up of quartzite and mica particles covering the surface, likely held in place by a dried pine resin adhesive or beeswax. Masks such as this were likely used by performers, or in a funerary context, and placed on the deceased's head to denote an identity or rank. Size: 7.5" L x 3" W (19 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Idledale, Colorado, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, USA; ex-Barry Kernerman collection, Toronto, Canada; ex-Samuel Dubiner collection, Tel Aviv, Israel, acquired 1960s-1970s.
