Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $400**

East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji era, ca. 19th century CE. A wooden Zushi shrine encasing a leaded-bronze statue of Fudo Myoo, which is the Japanese name for Acala, a dharmapala (wrathful deity), and his two attendants. The wood cabinet shrine is lightweight and simple, with a separate lacquered black wood niche containing the statue that rests upon a built-in pedestal, the doors open on metal hinges. Fudo Myoo was particularly important in Japanese Buddhism in the 19th century, and he is said to convert anger into salvation; with his glaring, terrifying face that frightens people into accepting the teachings of the Buddha. Buddhist statues in Japan frequently reside in such zushi - wooden shrines with doors that can both reveal or conceal the deity within. Some scholars trace this Japanese interpretation of a Buddhist practice to Shinto shrines, where it is rare to find a statue, and they are always concealed. The petite scale of this zushi suggests that it was intended for travel. Size: 4.5" L x 3" W x 6.75" H (11.4 cm x 7.6 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection
