BIOGRAPHY:
Christian Von Schneidau was known as a skilled mural and landscape painter. He was born in Smoland, Sweden, in 1893. He completed his early art education in Sweden with private tutors and later studied at the Stockholm Academy of Fine Art. Von Schneidau moved to the United States in 1906 where he settled in Minnesota. He stayed in the Mid-West for the next ten years continuing his education at the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, studying under Reynolds and Buehr, and later with Richard Miller and C.W. Hawthorne. In 1917 he relocated to Los Angeles, California where he opened the Von Schneidau School of Fine Art. During the 1930s he married twice, first to Esther Bergman and then to Signe Larson Nelson. He traveled to Alaska in the 1950s where he painted the portraits of governors Egan and Heinzelman. Later he taught portrait painting at the Bakersfield Art Association. During his career he exhibited at the California Arts Club (1918) and the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939). He was a member of the California Watercolor Society and the California Painters and Sculptors. Von Schneidau died in 1976 in Orange, California.
